Even the Sparrow was developed by a family whose life work rests on a profound belief in the power of the human-animal bond. Co-founder Taylor Chastain Griffin, PhD has a background as a dog trainer, mental health counselor, empirical researcher, and nonprofit executive.

In Dr. Griffin's doctoral research focused on the impact of pet care for survivors of domestic violence, two things became clear:

  • People will understandably delay seeking assistance if it means surrendering their pets,

  • Providing pet care during these immensely difficult seasons makes a tremendous difference.

Together, we can promote the healing power of pets during life's most challenging seasons.

Pets are family members, and the deep bonds we share with them significantly impact our mental health. Unfortunately, many people seeking recovery are left to make an impossible choice. To enter treatment often means to surrender a pet to a shelter because no other temporary care options are available. Our program allows these brave survivors to entrust us with their furry family members while they focus on healing and preparing for brighter days ahead.

Developed by an expert in animal behavior, our program provides pets with:
  • Comprehensive vet care.

  • Daily enrichment and socialization tailored to the preferences of each unique animal.

  • The same love and attention to detail we provide to our own beloved pets.

We realize this time of transition is challenging for the animals. That's why we provide consistency and comfort as the pets' home away from home.

We do more than provide safe shelter.

It's about more than caring for pets. It's about encouraging the people who love them.

It's a hard road that a person must take before finally making the difficult decision to seek in-patient rehabilitative care. These survivors need grace and encouragement, and they need to be able to trust that their pets are waiting for them on the other side of treatment.

While in our program, clients receive:

  • Weekly picture updates on how their pet is doing.

  • Letters of support from Even the Sparrow staff and volunteers.

  • Educational information to set the foundation for empowered pet care upon reunification.

Survivors find renewed hope and purpose knowing their furry family members are waiting for them on the other side.
